Exploring Backwash: Costa Rica’s Remote Longboarder Haven
Backwash offers a unique combination of seclusion, consistent wave conditions, and a strong longboarding community. Its distance from tourist-heavy developments preserves the spot’s natural charm and provides a peaceful surfing experience for those seeking quieter waves.
Location and Access
Backwash is located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, near the small village of Pavones (on the opposite of the gulf). This area is far from major tourist developments, emphasizing its remote character.
Access requires a journey through rural roads. A 4x4 vehicle, is highly mandatory due to uneven terrain and rough conditions especially during the rainy season.
There are limited accommodation and amenities nearby. Visitors typically stay in small lodges or cabins run by local families, contributing to the local economy and fostering an authentic Costa Rican experience.
Wave Characteristics and Surf Conditions
Backwash is known for its mellow, peeling right-hand wave that is ideal for longboards. The waves break over a cobblestone and sandy bottom, offering clean conditions even with a moderate swell.
The wave shape is forgiving, providing extended rides ranging from 100 to 300 meters, depending on the swell’s strength. Crowds are rare, and most in the lineup are experienced longboarders or locals.
Wind conditions are usually calm in the morning, with light offshore breezes.
Longboarding at Backwash
Longboarders are drawn to Backwash for its long, smooth rides and relaxed lineup atmosphere. There is a lot of cross-stepping and nose riding going on here.
Equipment choice often leans towards boards 9 feet and up, with many surfers preferring single-fin setups (a classic setup).
The spot is less appealing to shortboarders, who may seek more powerful waves elsewhere. Playa Matapalo for example is close by!
