The English translation for Playa Escondida would be Hidden Beach. It is not really hidden, but not so easy to get there. If you have access to the gated community you could paddle out to the reef. Otherwise you have to organize a boat from Playa Herradura or Jaco to get there.

This wave has gotten coverage in many magazines, books and videos. With the right conditions the reef creates Bilderbuch like lefts and rights. Even though this wave is not so easy to access it can get crowded. There are often 20 or 30 surfers in the line up of this point break. Many of the surfers are locales that have this wave pretty much figured out.

Don’t surf this spot during low tide, the reef is sharp and dangerous. Best conditions can be found during uprising mid tide. When there is a good swell from Southwest Playa Escondida is on. The wave can hold up to swell of 10 feet before the waves get bad. Waves peel of the reef to the left and to the right.
