Drake Bay Surf Spot Guide

Drake Bay is located in a remote area of Costa Rica. It is a bit easier to access since the coastal road got all the way paved in 2010.

It is possible to get to Drake Bay by car or by boat from Sierpe. There are options for guarded parking, it is ok to leave a rental car here for some days. Especially in the rainy season the road to Drake Bay can get rough. To get there it is necessary to cross some rivers. October and November are the months with the heaviest downpours in this zone of Costa Rica. Several hotels on the Osa Peninsula are closed during these 2 months.
The fastest way to get to Drake Bay from San Jose is by plane. Both of 2 domestic airlines in Costa Rica offer daily flights, at least in the high season, to Drake Bay from San Jose. It takes less than an hour to get there from the capital of Costa Rica. Make reservations ahead of time with Nature Air or SANSA Regional if this is the way you plan to travel.

The bay is named after the English explorer Sir Francis Drake, who anchored in this bay in 1579.

Swell from the South can create a long left at this point break, but this surf spot is not consistent. The wave is the best during mid tide.
