Boca Nosara Surf Spot Guide

Hotels in Nosara

This beach is bordered by the river mouth of Rio Nosara to the north. The best waves are directly at the river mouth. Shark encounters have been reported!
Nosara is well known for its consistent year-round waves, laid-back atmosphere, and vibrant surf culture. It attracts surfers of all levels from around the world, many of the longboarders, as well as those seeking yoga retreats and a relaxed, beachside lifestyle.

Surf Conditions

Boca Nosara offers different surf experiences depending on tide levels and seasonal conditions.

The rivermouth creates a unique break pattern, with waves that are generally smaller than at nearby Playa Guiones. Higher tides typically produce better conditions for the beachbreak, making it an excellent spot for longboarders. The swell is partially blocked by offshore rocks, resulting in gentler breaking waves.

Morning sessions often feature the best conditions before the afternoon onshore winds pick up. Wave size typically ranges from 2-6 feet, though larger swells can always occur.

Getting to Boca Nosara

Reaching Boca Nosara requires some planning as it's located in a relatively remote area of the Nicoya Peninsula in Puntarenas province. Most international travelers arrive via Juan Santamaría Airport in San José or Liberia International Airport.

From San José, take the Caldera Highway (Highway 27) through Orotina. This toll road significantly reduces travel time.

From Liberia Airport, the drive is shorter but still involves unpaved sections. During rainy season (May-November), a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended as roads can become difficult to navigate.

Local transportation options from Nosara town to Boca Nosara include taxis, rental cars, and even bicycle rentals for those staying nearby.

Nearby Surf Spots

Playa Guiones, just south of Boca Nosara, offers multiple peaks along its 7 km stretch. It's suitable for all skill levels and provides more reliable waves year-round. The beach break here works well at all tide levels.

North of Boca Nosara, more adventurous surfers can explore Ostional, known for its powerful beach break and sea turtle arrivals. South Beach and Garza also provide alternative breaks within a 30-minute drive, each with distinctive characteristics and varying levels of difficulty.
