Witch's Rock Surf Camp is located beach front in Tamarindo
Isla Capitan is known for its challenging waves, drawing experienced surfers in search of something different from the typical Tamarindo beach breaks. With its offshore island setting and deep water reef, it offers a unique surf experience on Costa Rica's north Pacific coast.
This is the outside reef in front of the beach of Tamarindo. The wave breaks to the left in front of the uninhabited island. You can hire a boat to take you out or paddle from the south end of the beach.
Don’t underestimate the distance, it takes around 40 minutes to get there.
Wave Types and Breaks
Isla Capitan features a left-hand reef break that peels along the outer edge of the island, producing long, powerful rides and occasional barreling sections. There is also a right-hand slab that breaks with more force over the deeper water, offering a different challenge. Not sure if that waves has ever been surfed.
Unlike Tamarindo’s main beach break, the waves here are more critical and require strong paddling skills. And local knowledge can be an asset.
Nearby surf spots, like Pico Grande and Pico Pequeño, Rocky Point, and El Estero, are much more accessible for varied skill levels, but Isla Capitan stands out for those seeking an adventure, remote waves.
Who Should Surf Isla Capitan?
This wave should be surfed at low tide. Only surf this spot when you know what you are doing! Getting washed over the reef is no fun and you can get seriously injured if you have bad luck. It is not recommended for those unfamiliar with surfing over rocks and deep water.
For anyone seeking surfing lessons or a more relaxed introduction, Tamarindo’s main breaks are safer and better staffed with surf schools. Isla Capitan is best left to confident surfers seeking a high-performance wave in a tropical paradise.
