The road from Puerto Jimenez ends in Carate. The ride to this remote place is bumpy and a 4x4 vehicle is necessary.

At the end of rainy season this area has the heaviest precipitation. During that time it is very humid. This is a beach break that is best surfed during low and upcoming tide. The swell should come from the South.

On Osa Peninsula there is plenty of wildlife. But not only on the land but as well in the water. Sharks have been sighted here.

Wave Characteristics at Carate

Carate offers a classic beach break with waves that peel in both left and right directions. This area is most reliable when south or southwest swells hit.

The beach stretches along open ocean, so Carate often picks up more swell than other locations nearby. The waves break over a sand bottom, and it is possible to find short, powerful rides extending up to 50 meters. Occasionally, shifting currents and small river mouths near the beach can change the shape and quality of surf breaks.

Water temperatures are warm all year, averaging between 26–29°C (about 79–84°F). The scene is wild and adventure-oriented, making Carate appealing to those looking for a more natural and uncrowded surfing experience.

Safety Considerations: Rocks and Ocean Hazards

Surfers should be cautious of submerged rocks, which can be more exposed at lower tides. These rocks are scattered in some sections, so it is recommended to inspect the surf spot from the beach at low tide before paddling out, especially for first-time visitors.

Rip currents can be strong, mainly during periods of bigger swell or after heavy rain when river mouths shift the sand. Entry and exit points may move, so extra care should be taken near the rivers, where currents and marine debris can be unpredictable.

There is plenty of wildlife here, including fish, sea birds and turtles. Watch for stingrays in the shallows.

Crowd Levels and Atmosphere

Carate Beach usually sees very few surfers, even during peak season. Many travelers and locals prefer famous surf destinations like Playa Matapalo, making Carate a spot with little crowd pressure. This peaceful vibe appeals to surfers looking to escape busy lineups.

With few commercial surf tourism in the area, Carate offers a more solitary surfing adventure. Most days, surfers have entire sections of the beach to themselves. Surf culture here is low-key, and the beach feels untouched by mass tourism.

Carate’s atmosphere is perfect for those who appreciate quiet, nature-filled sessions and value time spent away from busy, well known, surf spots or surf towns.
