Los Tumbos Surf Spot Guide

Location and Accessibility
You will find Los Tumbos just a short drive, to the North, from the city of Limón on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.
General Vibe and Atmosphere
The overall feeling at Los Tumbos is laid-back and local. On most days, you will see a mix of Costa Rican surfers and bodyboarders, especially younger riders drawn to the challenging waves.
The beach at Los Tumbos is not very large. You will sometimes find visiting surfers joining the locals in the water, but it's rarely crowded compared to other destinations.
Mornings tend to be the busiest, with mid-day often quieter as the sun gets stronger.
Surf Break Type
Los Tumbos delivers a fast, powerful, and hollow right-hand wave that breaks over a mix of sand and rock. The wave is short but intense, often forming clean tubes that can be challenging even for experienced surfers.
Because of the wave’s speed and close-out sections, it demands a quick take-off and strong paddling. The bottom can get shallow, especially near lower tides, be careful to avoid injury or damaging your board.
The spot works best on mid to high tides, and swell from the Caribbean can rapidly increase the size and power of the waves. Offshore winds from the west help shape the break, while onshore days can make the waves more unpredictable.
Bodyboarding Popularity
Los Tumbos is especially popular among bodyboarders. The fast, hollow nature of the wave makes it ideal for bodyboarding, with many riders coming here for the tubes and steep drop-ins. Bodyboarders enjoy the wave’s short pocket and forceful lip.
Playa Bonita and Playa Cocles
Playa Bonita is the closest major beach to Los Tumbos, only a few kilometers away. It is often used as a reference point for finding Los Tumbos and has a more relaxed atmosphere, with easier waves suited for beginners or those looking for a calmer session.
Playa Cocles, further south along the Caribbean coast, is another popular surf destination. If you want a break from the intensity of Los Tumbos or wish to surf somewhere with a different crowd, both beaches are easy to reach.
