El Gato is a surf spot located near Roca Loca on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Garabito area of Puntarenas. This waves breaks in front of Punta Guapinol, south of Jaco. Like Roca Loca, El Gato offers powerful waves that attract experienced surfers looking for challenging reef breaks.
The Waves at El Gato
It is best surfed at low upcoming tide. The swell has to come from the South. This wave still breaks nicely with bigger swells, around 10 feet, but not as big as Roca Loca. The bottom here is rocky and the currents can be strong, so caution and local knowledge are recommended.
For surfers visiting the area, El Gato offers a more secluded alternative, with a rugged natural setting and great waves for those prepared for the challenge.
