Los Suecos (Malpais) Surf Spot Guide
This is another left reef point in Mal Pais.
Los Suecos is a secluded beach located at the southern end of Malpais on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. Its name, "Los Suecos," translates to "The Swedes" in Spanish. The origin of this name is related to early Swedish expatriates, Olaf Wessberg and his wife Karen Mogensen, who settled near the area, giving the beach its unique moniker. It is also sometimes referred to as "Swedish Beach" by locals.
Surf Conditions at Los Suecos, Malpais
Go surfing here during high tides. The wave breaks faster and hollower than the wave at Punta Barrigona.
The reef creates the nicest waves during swells from the West and from the South.
The beach is renowned for its natural beauty, featuring a small, protected cove surrounded by rocky outcrops and lush jungle. Access to Los Suecos requires a drive down a rough road, often best navigated with a 4WD vehicle, which helps maintain its reputation as a "secret" or hidden spot, away from the crowds that frequent other beaches in the region.
