Playa Del Rey Surf Spot Guide
Hotels close to Playa Del Rey
This is the beach between Rio Naranjo and Rio Savegre.
The waves can become very good here. The best time to surf the lefts and rights at Playa del Rey is during mid tide. Be cautious at this beach, it is highly populated by crocodiles!
There might be a reason when there is nobody out on a day with perfect A-frame waves!
Surf Break and Wave Characteristics
The waves here form over a sandy bottom, that make it a great place to build skills or enjoy a session. The beach is less crowded than some of the more famous spots in the country, giving surfers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Playa Del Rey offers a fair challenge and plenty of fun for those ready to explore one of Costa Rica’s lesser-known gems.
Location and Surroundings
Located near Quepos and Manuel Antonio, it offers several peaks, making it attractive to different levels of surfers.
However, there is a significant safety warning: Crocodiles inhabit the river mouth on the north end, so extra caution is needed near the Rio Naranjo area.
The drive can be bumpy, but the secluded setting is worth the effort for those seeking quieter surf.
The beach itself forms a long, wide strip of sand, bordered by palm trees and backed by remote fields. It is not developed, with little in the way of local amenities, shops, or restaurants. Surfers should bring their own supplies as there are no rental shops directly on the beach.
To the north, the Rio Naranjo meets the sea, creating a river mouth area rich with local wildlife.
