Playa Guacalillo is a lesser-known surf spot located on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, near the scenic cliffs of El Peñon de Guacalillo. The Surf at Playa Guacalillo
Surfing the left at Playa Guacalillo is not for lazy surfers, one constantly has to fight the current to be at the right spot.
The bottom is sandy with some rocks. Playa Guacalillo is best surfed during low and upcoming tide. The swell has to come from the Northwest or the South. This beach is close to the river mouth of Rio Tarcoles, check for crocodiles!
The beach itself is relatively quiet, and the nearby Peñon de Guacalillo cliff offers stunning ocean views, making it a unique place to visit even for those not surfing. The area is accessible by car and is just about 25 minutes off the main highway, the road is unpaved. Yet it retains a secluded atmosphere, perfect for a day trip or a quick getaway from the city.
