Surf conditions at Punta Barrigona

This wave should only be surfed by experienced surfers!

It breaks in front of the Mar Azul Restaurant in Mal Pais. The left reef point curls best during low tide. Check this wave during strong swells from the West and from the South. The bottom is reef, so watch out!

Waves break over a combination of reef and rock bottom, extending up to 100 meters when conditions align properly.

Access to Punta Barrigona requires local knowledge, as the location remains relatively hidden compared to other Costa Rica surf destinations. The surrounding area features lush tropical vegetation with monkeys frequently visible in nearby trees.

Punta Barrigona and Playa Barrigona

Don’t confuse Punta Barrigona in Malpais with Playa Barrigona, which is located further north along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula—these are two distinct destinations! Playa Barrigona often makes headlines because Hollywood actor Mel Gibson purchased a estate there in 2007. This secluded property, nestled between the towns of Nosara and Sámara, boasts extensive beachfront and lush tropical surroundings. Over the years, Gibson’s estate has attracted several celebrity guests; for instance, pop star Britney Spears was reported to have vacationed there. Playa Barrigona is renowned for its pristine white-sand beach and tranquil atmosphere.
